Club Culture Cumbria
Being autistic, I've spent my life studying faces, scrutinising them to help me understand. And through that, I've never failed to notice how much beauty they hold. The features you might shy away from - laugh lines, a crooked nose, an unwanted scar are often where I see something rare and brilliant. It's this beauty I'm always trying to capture for myself and share back with you.
The Club Culture projects have given me the opportunity to do exactly that. Thanks to support from the Arts Council, I've been able to follow up my first Club Culture project photographing everyday, working class people - like those I grew up around - so we can document and celebrate these unique individuals who often go unseen.
Every time I pull up to a club for a shoot, I have to fight through my need for certainty, resist the instinct to turn back, and steady my nerves just to step into these rare and fading spaces - places that are slowly vanishing in the uncertain world we are drifting towards.
In the rich, green beauty of the Cumbrian landscape, I've found so much: people who move from club to club chasing the best and cheapest pint; talk of a history of a long forgotten intolerance for female members; conversations about rising energy costs and the pressure they place on struggling venues; some of the most radiant smiles and faces that I've ever captures; and more individuals who swore they'd break my lens, yet still sat down, open and willing, to be seen in their finest light, in their favourite place.
